Syd Mead

I think quite a few industrial/automotive design students goes through a Syd Mead period. He's a concept designer and futurist, most famous for his work with Bladerunner and Tron. He worked for Philips (at same time as Norwegian Knut Yran was head of design (thats worth another post altogether...)) during the 70's and did some fantastic inspirational concepts. I'm not sure if any his concepts went into production, but he was still a legend within Philips when I arrived 30 years later. They cleaned out the old Philips Design offices sometime around 2000 and some of his original illustrations were discovered and distributed around (my colleague had an framed illustration of a very futuristic iron...). These are some of his orginal sketches for the Tron Light Cycle. The man can draw.
